About The Town of Brookfield, NY
Brookfield, NY lies nestled in the rolling hills of the upper Unadilla valley within the heart of New York's Central Leatherstocking region. Located in the southeast corner of Madison County, at nearly 80 square miles the Town of Brookfield is the largest town within the county. However, it also boasts one of the counties smallest populations at roughly 2600 residents. As such, the Town of Brookfield truly defines peaceful country living both in and around the village hamlets of Brookfield, Leonardsville, and North Brookfield.
Home of the Madison County Fair since 1839, the Town of Brookfield has much to offer outdoor enthusiasts, including a gorgeous 130 mile trail system meandering through 13,000 beautiful acres within the Beaver Creek, Brookfield Railroad, and Charles E. Baker State Forests. Whether by foot, horseback, mountain bike, snowmobile or cross-country ski, these breathtaking trails offer the outdoor lover an ultimate getaway.

About Leonardsville
Reuben Leonard operated several businesses in Leonardsville soon after 1800; among them was a grocery and dry goods store. Before the establishment of a government post office, it was custom to address mail to the recipient "In care of Leonards." When the Post Office Department eventually gave this location an official name, it was Leonardsville. Although Leonardsville received its name from Reuben Leonard, it owes its existence to "The Shops," as the various small manufactories of the last century were called.

Located on the Unadilla River, where a dam provided water power, a scythe and hoe factory was in business by 1808. Other factories which gained their power from the impounded water included a general blacksmith shop, grist and saw mills, a horse rake factory and wagon shop, a foundry and machine shop.

About North Brookfield.- This is a small village in the northwest part of the town, a mile east of the railroad station of the same name. Samuel Marsh opened a store there in 1804 about a mile and a half southeast of the village, but failed in business. Samuel Livermore was the first merchant on the village site, beginning about 1809, and was succeeded by a man named Mills. Laban Olby, a colored man, kept a grocery from 1815 to about 1844.
